Healthy Foods for Healthy Teeth

You eat with your body in mind, so why not eat with your teeth in mind as well? It’s not just the typical sweets and sugars that can be damaging to your teeth; sometimes even healthy foods can be dangerous to your oral health. Do you know how to eat for your teeth? Dr. Martin, cosmetic dentist in Wayne, and our team understand what it takes to have an exceptional smile, and want to share some tips on eating healthy for optimal dental health.

  • #1- Save carbs for mealtimes. In other words, steer clear of eating breads, potato chips, or other foods high in carbohydrates for snacks. Most of these foods have a sticky texture once chewed, making them easier to adhere to teeth or gums, or get stuck between teeth. In the end, high-carb foods break down into simple sugars, which convert into plaque-causing bacteria. By eating these foods with larger meals, your mouth will produce more saliva which helps wash them away.
  • #2- Use a straw. Most carbonated beverages and fruit juices contain acids which damages tooth enamel. By using a straw, there is less contact between these drinks and your teeth.
  • #3- Eat raw fruits and veggies. Eating raw carrots, apples and other raw vegetables can help remove plaque and prevent tartar buildup. Dark green leafy veggies such as spinach or kale help strengthen gum tissue. Strawberries and lemons are also great for the gums, plus are known to help whiten teeth.
  • #4- Get your dairy. Calcium-rich foods are proven to help strengthen and maintain strong teeth. Yogurt and cheese neutralize acids and help rebuild tooth enamel.

If you have concerns about the health of your teeth or are looking to enhance your smile, schedule an appointment with Dr. Martin, cosmetic dentist near Wayne, NJ. We look forward to hearing from you!
