Why Floss?

Dental floss cleans in between the teeth, where a toothbrush can’t reach. Floss removes plaque that accumulates between the teeth and gums.It helps to control bad breath.

Floss is an important weapon against plaque., Many people don’t spend enough time flossing or brushing, and many have never been taught to floss or brush properly. When visiting your dentist or hygienist, ask to be shown how to floss

Which type of floss should I use?

Whatever kind you’ll actually use (waxed or unwaxed)- studies show they work equally well. The key is to floss every day.

The different types of dental floss include:

  • waxed and unwaxed
  • flavored and unflavored
  • wide and regular

How should I floss?
There are two flossing methods: the spool method and the loop method. The spool method is suited for those with manual dexterity

  • spool method (also called the finger-wrap method)
Cut off a piece of floss that is approximately 18 to 20 inches in length. Lightly wrap each side of the piece of floss several times around each middle finger. Next, carefully maneuver the floss inbetween the teeth with your index fingers and thumbs in an up and down, not side-to-side motion. It is best to bring the floss up and down making sure to go below the gumline, forming a “C” on the side of each tooth.
  • loop method (also called the circle method)
Cut off a piece of floss that is approximately 18 inches long, and tie it securely in a circle. Next, place all of the fingers, except the thumb, within the loop. Then, use your index fingers to guide the floss through the lower teeth, and use your thumbs to guide the floss through the upper teeth, making sure to go below the gumline, forming a “C” on the side of each tooth.

How often should I floss?

Floss once a day, minimum, for at least two or three minutes.

Do I need a waterpick (irrigating device)?

Don’t use waterpicks as a substitute for tooth brushing and flossing. They are effective around orthodontic braces that retain food in areas a toothbrush cannot reach. There is a product called Hydrofloss, that has magnets in the handle. These magnets have an effect on the surface tension on the tooth and the plaque does not adhere to the tooth as easily. We have seen over the years that religious users of the Hydrofloss have less periodontal issues and better home care. It is great addition to one’s home care regiment.
